What keeps a system in balance when every element is in motion?
I grew up on a small island where nature was close—and so was its threat. Storms, quakes, the sea: you learn early that some forces answer to no human hand, and that living means finding a balance with them, not winning.
This installation was commissioned by Lexus International around their theme “Amazing in Motion,” for Milan Design Week 2014 at Circolo Filologico Milanese—one of three works invited worldwide, alongside Fabio Novembre and MIT’s Tangible Media Group. I wanted to create something that visitors could feel, not just see. Dozens of fragile acrylic discs—leaves, I called them—hang from the ceiling, responding to the air that moves through the hall as people walk beneath. Their movements become its movements. Light and shadow shift accordingly.
Press one point, and the whole body sways. Remove one small leaf, and every balance fails. That is what I wanted people to feel, standing in that room.
The whole piece traveled in two boxes, carried by hand—our answer to what a five-day fair leaves behind.
